The BMW N57D30T0 / 40d engine is one of the most powerful diesel engines in the N57 series – equipped with a double turbo and a Bosch EDC17CP45 controller.
Despite the factory power of 306 HP, this unit has a very large safety margin and allows for achieving impressive results while maintaining the full durability of the drive system.
Safe Stage 1 for BMW X5 40d
Our goal in this project was to develop a Stage 1 that would provide a significant increase in performance without overloading the supercharging system and automatic transmission.
All parameters have been adjusted to work with standard equipment (DPF, SCR, intercooler, ZF8HP gearbox).

The increase in power and torque was achieved within the safety limits of EGT, AFR and boost limits – without exceeding the maximum values of boost pressure or exhaust gas temperatures.
The engine responds more quickly, and mid-range acceleration has become more dynamic and smooth.
ECU Modification Process – EDC17CP45
The Bosch EDC17CP45 controller in the N57 40d engines requires precise editing of the torque, fuel and boost sections while maintaining the original BMW strategies.
As part of the implementation, the following was carried out:

💻 reading and writing ECU in bench mode,

🔍 log analysis: boost, rail pressure, MAF, EGT, corrections,

⚙️ individual calibration of torque, fuel, SOI, and torque limiter maps,

🧠 optimization of thermal protection and maximum pressures,

📈 tests and validation on Dynomax / Dynomet dynamometers.
Each file was prepared manually , based on actual data from logs and measurements - without the use of ready-made drivers.
Characteristics after modification

🚗 perfect cooperation with the ZF8HP gearbox – no jerking,

This is a safe, mature Stage 1 that not only improves performance but also increases driving comfort and flexibility – especially in Comfort and Sport modes.
